This community originated in the 15th century. The strategic location predetermined the village to be a component part of anti fascist resistence during the Slovak National Uprising. The village was burnt by the Germans on March 20, 1945. A few days after in Banská Bystrica and its surroundings the second World War ended. The restoration of Baláže was the first youth building project in Slovakia. Youths from Bulgaria, Greece, Yugoslavia, Canada and the U.S.A. participated. In the village there are memorials to the partisans and victim of the Slovak National Uprising.
